This summer students entering grades 4th-6th will have the opportunity to participate in a program on Fridays that will feature a curriculum offered and facilitated by the Area Substance Abuse Council known as LifeSkills Training. We feel this will be an informative, engaging, and worthwhile opportunity for all of our students. The group will meet once a week on Fridays at 1pm on June 21, 28, July 12, 26, August 2, 9, 16. The Lifeskills Training will last 45 minutes followed by 45 minutes of hands on activities and library time. Activities will include making their own snacks, games and crafts. Program will end at 2:30pm.
Lifeskills Training is an evidence-based curriculum that takes a comprehensive and dynamic approach to promote positive youth development. The goals of this program include promoting personal self-management skills, general social skills, and also drug resistance skills. The program aims to give students the confidence and skills necessary to handle challenging situations by resisting things such as peer pressure, coping with stressors and anxiety, and ultimately developing a greater self-esteem and self-confidence. By the end of the program, students should have increased their knowledge of the consequences of substance abuse while also being able to successfully resist such pressures.
Students will be given a confidential survey before and after the program, meant to measure the outcomes and effectiveness of the program in relation to substance abuse attitudes. Results will not be shared, and are solely for the use of the facilitating agency, the Area Substance Abuse Council.
Students who attend 5 of the 7 programs will be invited to attend an afterhours movie and pizza night in September. Each time students attend they will be given a ticket to enter for a chance to win 2 movie tickets to Voy Theater in Maquoketa.
